We
have been waiting to sample a variety of game meats and authentic
African food....and the Boma Dinner had it all! The Boma is nestled
in a Gusu Forest and is partly open to the spectacular African skies.
We were welcomed with a traditional greeting in Shona and Ndebele,
the local languages, and each had our face painted (dots for Jenesa –
stripes for Leonard).
Before
eating, we took part in a hand washing ceremony (watering only your
fingertips) at our table. Afterwards, we each had a taste of village
beer and light African canapes (nuts). From the buffett and campfire
the Boma offered the following menu of African dishes:
STARTERS
baby
crocodile tail
Impala
knuckle terrine
Zambezi
river bream fillet
smoked
guinea fowl
goat's
cheese
salads/garden
vegetables
MAIN DISHES
warthog
'pumba' steak
eland
& kudu steak
boerwors
sausage
beef/pork/marinated
chicken
spit
roast of the day
lamb
And,
for dessert....a certificate was awarded to anyone who would eat a
Mopani worm. The worm is the large caterpillar of the Gonimbrasia belina species, commonly called the emperor moth. It's called a mopani worm because it feeds on the leaves of mopane trees after it hatches in summer.
You don't think the Leonard's would back down from a challenge, right? We're not coming home without one of those certificates. Only....my name's not on it. Check out Jenesa's worm theatrics!
