I Want A Hippopotamus For Xmas....

This evening we went on a Zambezi River sunset (booze) cruise to celebrate surviving our afternoon zip line adventure! The mighty Zambezi, the fourth longest river in Africa, passes through six countries on its journey east from Zambia to the Indian Ocean.

For this particular cruise all of the boats navigate a 6 km stretch of river above Victoria Falls themselves (shallow waters and hazardous rocks prevent them from venturing any further).

As the sun began to set ahead of us....we caught a glimpse of our first Hippo peaking his head out of the water by the shoreline. You could just see his eyes and ears....the rest of his body submerged underwater.  Hippos are considered the second largest land animal on Earth (first place goes to the elephant!).  To stay cool in the blistering African heat, hippos spend most of their day in rivers and lakes. Their eyes, nose and ears are located on the top of their head, which means they can see and breathe whilst submerged in the water.

A little further down the river we got a great opportunity to some Hippos making their way out of the water for dinner.  Hippos are most active at night, when they forage for food. They are considered herbivores, and eat mostly grass.  In just one night, they can guzzle down up to 77 pounds of their favorite grub!  I am so glad I bought a new camera with plenty of zoom before this trip.  It was absolutely the best investment to make for this vacation.

As the sun continues to set we continue to celebrate!
