Greece Lightnin'

We arrived in Athens, Greece on Wednesday. We were excited to see the Acropolis and the Parthenon (at least I was!). Jenesa was on a mission to find a slushie at the nearest concession stand. I guess I couldn't blame her....the temperature today was 106 degrees (38 degrees Celcius)!!!!

The Parthenon was built as a temple to worship the Greek goddess Athena, daughter of Zeus. The Parthenon sits high atop the city of Athens for all to see.....thus, the reason no skyscrapers have been built in the city (blocking its view).....or maybe because of all the earthquakes in the area (so we were told).

The Parthenon is going through extensive renovations....and they are re-piecing together this architectural masterpiece block by block.

You can actually see where new marble has been fused with the ancient marble to strengthen and maintain this historical landmark. As the workers remove the old marble to make repairs, they number it and place all the pieces around the surrounding area.
