Transportation
around Rome isn't the easiest thing we've ever done. Getting simple
directions from one place to the next is near impossible (unless you
know Italian!). The only Italian
I
know is Rocky Balboa and the Olive Garden menu. The city metro
system runs around the city – not through it. Therefore, you have
to use trams, buses, and trains to get from one place to another.
Exhausting to communicate with the locals and figure it all out!
Luckily,
we took the tram and bus to the Piazza Navona (above) early Saturday morning.
This place used to be a Roman arena for athletic contest and chariot races, the Piazza is now lined with luxurious cafes, street vendors, and three lavish Baroque fountains. On our list of thing's to do was to enjoy the much touted ice cream dessert, tartufo. These little suckers cost $10euro....but after tasting the chocolate treat, we deemed it worthy of the price! Not to mention the morning atmosphere sitting at the outside cafe on the Piazza.... enjoying the cool watery mist surrounding us at the cafe.
Onto the Pantheon.
We saw the Pantheon on our last
visit to Rome, but we could not go inside due to renovations. So
this was on our list of things to re-do and get a chance to see what
we missed. The Pantheon is the temple of all gods. It was built between 118-125 AD by Emperor Hadrian. In the 7th Century it was made into a church by early Christians and now is lined with tombs. The Pantheon is the best preserved building of ancient Rome, has a spectacular dome, and FREE admission.
