Our Elephant Safari

Departing the resort in the late afternoon, we headed to the edge of the Zambezi River gorges to take part in an elephant sunset safari. It seems Dumbo invested his peanuts well....and has thus retired to greener pastures. So, we were introduced to Coco.

Exactly how do you get on top of the largest land mammal in the world?  No problem!

Our safari took us through ancient game trails allowing us to enjoy the spectacular scenery and witness three giraffe hiding in the bush!

It was quite hard to capture a decent photo on this adventure (16 blurry photos vs. 4 blog-worthy shots).  Coco wasn't the smoothest ride of the bunch!

After riding Coco we were given the opportunity to "thank him" for the ride with handfuls of grain pellets.  Whatever happened to peanuts?  Some elephants would lift their trunks and stick out their tongue welcoming any food we had.  Other elephants dropped their trunks right into your open hands and would vacuum the food out of it.

Unfortunately, Coco's vacuum didn't work, thus....he curled his trunk like the letter J and we dropped the pellets into it.

We learned one thing on this elephant safari......who needs a chainsaw when you've got a pet elephant? They literally wrap their trunks around the branches of trees and yank the entire branch from the tree to feast on its bark and leaves.
