Have you ever seen a Nile crocodile?
The Nile crocodile is an African crocodile, the largest freshwater predator in Africa, and may be considered the second-largest extant reptile and crocodilian in the world, after the saltwater crocodile. The diet of the Nile crocodile is mainly fish, but it will attack almost anything unfortunate enough to cross its path, including zebras, small hippos, porcupines, birds, and other crocodiles.
This morning we floated down the St. Lucia Estuary on the east coast of Africa. This tidal estuary is home to 1200 Nile Crocodiles, 800 Hippo's and an abundance of bird-life! Just over the hill you can see the Indian Ocean. This is our last stop before heading to Cape Town.
Did you ever play the game Hungry Hippos as a kid? That's the closest I've ever gotten to an actual Hippo.....until today! There were Hippos everywhere! On land. In the water. Right beside our boat. I really don't think you want a Hippopotamus for Christmas.
The St. Lucia Estuary is South Africa's very first World Heritage Site. It is the largest estuarine system on the African Continent and boasts the largest concentration of Hippo in South Africa. The Hippopotamus is one of the most aggressive and unpredictable creatures in the world and, as such, ranks among the most dangerous animals in Africa.
